Minister of Justice Ouahbi rises up against underage marriage

Assabah daily of Thursday June 16, 2022 reported that Morocco continues to see on daily basis cases of underage marriages, which means the marriage of young girls/wives and all what is required of heavy responsibility.

Underage marriage brings damage to young married girls as they find themselves obliged to get past adolescence, which is an important period of life where personality starts to form, and life starts to unfold and as a consequence negative impacts influence bringing up of children.

To stop underage problem, added the Moroccan daily, Minister of Justice, Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi has risen up against underage marriage either from husband or the young girl’s family, confirming this kind of marriage has dire consequences on bringing up children and on family coherence.

The Minister has considered in one of his statements that “underage marriage bothers us all due to its negative impacts on young girls’ lives”, before he has stressed on the necessity to focus on this phenomenon with boldness and courage to halt it since it is largely linked to the increase of death rate and school dropping.

Among the problems resulted from underage marriage, is the increase rate of school dropping and rate of divorce. The Minister added that this represent 7% of marriage cases in Morocco, which means that thousands of young girls leave school to get married and give birth to children and divorce may occur at the end of the matter.

Minister Ouahbi has called for fixing this problem and bringing equity to women, saying that despite progress being made on women behalf in Morocco, this does not hide women poor status in rural areas in particular.
