Hammam owners in Casablanca call on the government to honor its commitments

Protests. The owners and managers of traditional hammams, Moorish baths and public showers, within Casablanca-Settat region, denounced the government’s “broken promise” over granting lump sum compensations for the benefit of this sector’s employees.

The owners and managers of these hammams – affiliated to the General Union of Enterprises and Professions – urged the government to honor the promise made by the State Minister in charge of Human Rights before the Parliament, stressing that two months have passed since the latter made such an announcement, however, employees within this vital sector have not been compensated, despite the numerous correspondences addressed to the government and the competent authorities.

The General Union of Enterprises and Professions has also emphasized the deplorable conditions that Hammam employees endure today, considering the prolonged shutdown of their activities due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The owners of these hammams noted that despite the recent resumption of their activities, their income remains “very limited”, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
