Minister of Justice Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi: Reforming the justice sector requires the integration of modern civil society.. adoption of alternative sentences and digitization are fundamental tools to make successful this important major project

Minister of Justice Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi has called for a large and strong integration of modern civil society in supporting various reforms launched by the Ministry concerning legal arsenal (criminal code law as an example), stating that those reforms would bring an immense legal improvement in our country and help it to enter a new phase full of results and achievements, saying “in the past, there was a social debate, bringing out specific ideas and the case now is that we legislate for the nation and not out of pure ideological convictions”.

Concerning the on-going debate about the eligibility of civil activist to submit complaints against “elected persons” at different territorial levels, Ouahbi said, during his invitation to Al Aoula tv program “Nokta Ila Satr” broadcast last Wednesday May 11, 2022, that the state works with the logic of “institutions”, and the latter’s fundamental role is to fight corruption under its different aspects, adding “against whom those complaints will be submitted? Against corruption? Or against those who reject corruption?

Minister of Justice considered that the above-cited debate strays away from the right way, confirming that elected body is doing its job under the supervision of the Interior Ministry, informing that complaints received by the Interior Department do not carry any name, no address and nothing of this kind, which makes them look like denunciations and malicious complaints.

Mr. Ouahbi said that he is working firmly to drop out death sentence and adopt alternative sentences for the behalf of many categories accused of carrying out criminal acts (children and addicted..), confirming that “Morocco has all the capabilities to go ahead with that reforming process.

Minister of Justice has talked about “digitization” of the justice sector and its different facilities as an important step to help litigants and accompanied persons, highlighting that digitization process will contribute to the justice department performance (digitization of payment of traffic fines, lists of experts and lawyers, amending lawyers bills..), especially now that there is a boom of  information technology and it’s time to make use of modern technology in pushing forward those reforms.
