Minister of Territory Rehabilitation, Urbanization, Housing and City Policy Mrs. Fatima Zahra Mansouri has disclosed that starting from 2024 a five-year program will be endorsed with the Ministry of Interior to accelerate the pace of eliminating shanty towns in Morocco.
Minister Mansouri has informed in her response to MPs oral questions session of last Monday, December 4, 2023 that the 2024 program will rely on integrating the private sector, on direct subventions and former subventions as well to bring necessary funds assistance to make successful this promising program of eliminating shanty towns in Morocco.
Minister Mansouri has stated that the national program dubbed “cities without shanty towns”, which was inaugurated in 2004, aims at treating living conditions for 270.000 families; however the figure has jumped to 456.000 by the end of 2023, making clear that since the launching of the new program by the end of last September 2023, 332.000 out of 456.000 families have seen their living conditions improved, and 61 cities have been announced as cities without shanty towns; in addition to 13.000 new families have improved their living conditions over the last 9 months of the current year: This means that in average between 2018-2021 about 6.200 families have benefited annually from the program; and 14.500 have benefited from the same program between 2022-2023.
