Les enfants malgaches sont parmi les plus exposés au monde aux risques liés au changement climatique, a indiqué le Fonds des Nations unies pour l’enfance (UNICEF).
«Madagascar fait partie des dix premiers pays au monde où l’enfant est le plus à risque de subir les effets du changement climatique», a souligné l’UNICEF dans un communiqué publié en marge du sommet mondial sur le climat (COP 27), organisé du 06 au 18 novembre en Égypte.
Le fonds onusien a ajouté que l’absence de pluies et la sécheresse prolongée dans le sud de la Grande Ile ont laissé près de 1,5 million de personnes en situation d’insécurité alimentaire dont la moitié sont des enfants.
«En 2022, on estime que 500.000 enfants de moins de 5 ans souffriront de de malnutrition aiguë et 110.000 souffriront de malnutrition sévère», a-t-on mis en garde.
« La crise climatique est là »
À cet égard, le chef de la délégation de l’UNICEF pour la COP27, Paloma Escudero, a fait observer que « cette année, nous assistons à des inondations d’une ampleur sans précédent dans le monde entier et, avec elles, à une explosion des menaces pesant sur les enfants ».
« La crise climatique est là. Dans de nombreux endroits, les inondations sont les pires qu’on ait connues depuis des générations. Nos enfants souffrent déjà à une échelle que leurs parents n’ont jamais connue », a-t-elle déploré.
Elle a signalé également que « les jeunes des endroits les plus touchés de la planète sont victimes de l’inaction climatique », notant que les différents acteurs sur la scène internationale doivent agir de manière urgente car des vies sont en jeu.
M. Escudero a relevé ainsi que « la COP27 est l’occasion de tracer une feuille de route crédible avec des étapes claires pour le financement de l’adaptation au climat et les solutions pour les pertes et les dommages ».
Selon l’UNICEF, en plus de faire pression sur les gouvernements et les grandes entreprises pour qu’ils réduisent rapidement leurs émissions, l’UNICEF exhorte les dirigeants à prendre des mesures immédiates pour protéger les enfants de la dévastation climatique en adaptant les services sociaux essentiels dont ils dépendent.
Les mesures d’adaptation, comme la création de systèmes d’approvisionnement en eau, de santé et d’éducation qui résistent aux inondations et aux sécheresses, permettront de sauver des vies, a-t-on rappelé.
