La planète vient de connaitre le mois de janvier le plus chaud jamais enregistré, avec des températures à la surface de la mer sans précédent, a révélé l’Organisation météorologique mondiale (OMM).
La température de janvier a été supérieure de 0,12 °C par rapport à la température du mois de janvier précédent le plus chaud, en 2020 et de 0,70 °C à la moyenne de la période entre 1991 et 2020, a précisé l’OMM dans un nouveau rapport sur l’état du climat, publié mercredi.
Citant des données de la National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), de la NASA, du Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) et de l’Agence météorologique japonaise, l’OMM relève que la température moyenne mensuelle de l’air en surface était supérieure de 1,66 °C à une estimation de la moyenne de janvier pour la période entre 1850 et 1900, la période de référence préindustrielle désignée.
Un niveau record pendant dix mois consécutifs
S’agissant de la surface de la mer, la température moyenne globale a atteint 20,97°C, soit 0,26°C plus chaud que le précédent mois de janvier le plus chaud (2016), un niveau record pendant dix mois consécutifs.
Les précipitations mondiales ont également atteint un niveau presque record en janvier, après un mois de décembre exceptionnellement humide, indique la même source, notant que de grandes parties de l’Amérique du Nord, de l’Asie et de l’Australie ont été plus humides que la moyenne, tandis qu’une grande partie de l’Afrique australe et de l’Amérique du Sud ont été plus sèches que la normale.
Depuis le 31 janvier, la température journalière de la surface de la mer a atteint de nouveaux records absolus, dépassant les précédentes valeurs les plus élevées des 23 et 24 août 2023.
Le rapport final de l’OMM sur l’état du climat mondial en 2023 sera publié le 23 mars 2024 à l’occasion de la Journée météorologique mondiale.
