The Berkane Municipal Council Unanimously Approves Road Improvement Projects

The Municipal Council of Berkane, chaired by Member of Parliament Mohamed Ibrahimi, recently held its third extraordinary session of 2021 at the municipality’s headquarters. This session is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to keep pace with the momentum it has gained in implementing development projects across various sectors.

The extraordinary session was marked by the adoption of resolutions authorizing expropriation and the initiation of legal proceedings after identifying the owners in order to compensate them, with the aim of constructing three roads connecting the city to the ring road, as well as the adoption of a resolution declaring a public interest for the completion of the street running alongside the banks of the Wadi Wertas, starting from the wholesale market area to connect it to the ring road, in addition to submitting a request to the relevant authorities to cover the compensation costs for landowners against whom court rulings have been issued, as part of the urban rehabilitation project, which requires significant real estate resources for its completion.

The session of the Berkane Municipal Council also saw the postponement of items related to management contracts between the Berkane municipality and the Local Development Company — regarding the management of parking lots, neighborhood playgrounds, the livestock market, and the municipality’s digitization efforts. The municipality had been in the process of transferring some of these facilities to private companies before awarding them to the Local Development Company as an alternative, a strategic option, and a management mechanism to replace private companies.

In the same vein, the Berkane Municipal Council unanimously approved partnership agreements for the renovation and modernization of the weekly market and the completion of the construction and equipping of the slaughterhouse, as well as an amendment to the draft agreement regarding the construction of a youth center in the city of Berkane.

It should be noted that the Municipal Council of Berkane discussed the issue of compensating certain companies that do business with the municipality and whose interests were harmed as a result of the forced suspension of their activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic; these companies submitted claims for compensation in accordance with a letter from the Minister of the Interior to municipal leaders on this matter.
