Morocco moved up nine places in the 2021 Global Peace Index, published by the London Institute for Peace and Democracy, thereby displacing Tunisia from the top spot among Maghreb countries.
According to a report by the institute, Morocco ranked 79th globally on the Global Peace Index with a score of 2.015, placing first in the Maghreb region and sixth among Arab countries.
The Global Peace Index report, which covers 163 countries, is based on three main criteria: first, the level of safety and security in society; second, domestic and international conflict; and third, the level of military strength.
In terms of safety and security in society, Morocco scored 2.261; it scored 1.865 in terms of domestic and global conflict, and 1.798 in terms of military force.
The report issued by the Institute for Economics and Peace noted that the economic cost of violence in Morocco exceeded $15 million, representing 5 percent of the gross domestic product.
The report stated that although Yemen is the least peaceful country in the region, fear of violence is much higher in Morocco, where 64 percent of Moroccans reported being extremely concerned—the highest percentage of any country in the region.
The report ranked Qatar first in the Arab world and 29th globally, followed by Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Oman, Morocco, Tunisia, and Bahrain. Algeria came in ninth place and 12th globally, while Yemen ranked last.
The top 10 countries in the Global Peace Index are all developed nations: Iceland, New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal, Slovenia, Australia, Switzerland, Ireland, the Czech Republic, and Canada.
