Moroccan Political Party Leaders Condemn Algerian Attacks on King’s person

Morocco has been living in a state of indignation ever since the Algerian TV channel “Echourouk”, supported by the ruling National Liberation Front member, Slimane Saadaoui, broadcasted inappropriate content attacking the king’s person.

“The King is a red Line” hashtag, however, continues to bring upon more supporters on social media, for all Moroccans stand by their King in light of the brutal media attack led by the Algerian military-oriented media against the kingdom’s interests, which has intensified since the American recognition of the Moroccan Sahara”, Arabic-language news website, Hespress.com, reported on Sunday.

Leaders of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), Istiqlal party, as well as the Progress and Socialism Party (PPS), have also condemned the Algerian channel’s provocations, Hespress wrote.

“Such attack shall be strongly condemned for it tends to harm Morocco’s national symbols, including the image of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God grant him victory, for we, as Moroccans, shall cling to our modest nationalist motto: God – Country – King”, said RNI President, Aziz Akhannouch, on social media.

“We did not expect the Algerian regime to abide by Morocco’s consecutive diplomatic gains under the leadership of His Majesty the King, may God protect him, with respect to our territorial integrity; yet, we suspected Algeria’s media to wage a war of malicious rumours against our country”, Akhannouch added.

For his part, PAM Secretary General, Abdellatif Ouahbi, expressed his displeasure with the actions taken by Algerian channel “Echourouk” -a channel that is controlled by Algerian officials and financed by public monetary resources- for the latter tried to undermine Morocco’s ancestral institutions, which constitute a political and institutional complex for certain officials in Algeria”.

“Echourouk’s attitude was completely reprehensible, for it does not only undermine the respect due to the Head of State of a neighboring country, but also violates the most basic laws and principles”, Ouahbi wrote on his official Facebook page, pointing that “such irresponsible, reckless, childish and clumsy behavior, shall be strictly condemned, for it does not reflect the essence of the Moroccan/Algerian culture”.

Ouahbi also drew attention to the gravity of the situation in Algeria, which has become “very critical, yet understandable”, noting that “Algeria’s internal problems shall not be exploited” before further denouncing “the malicious attack on Morocco’s foundations, for the latter has always been anxious to ensure a good neighbourly attitude in respect to both countries’ common history, noting that Algeria shall reconsider its neighbourly attitude, having regard to the Moroccan/Algerian common history and ties”.

Within the same context, Istiqlal party’s SG, Nizar Baraka, raised several questions in terms of Algeria’s hostility towards Morocco, for he wondered whether Algeria’s military-oriented media has run out of options to contain its people’s frustration, and suddenly decided to bring crisis upon Morocco as to distract the Algerian people from their real concerns and legitimate demands.

“Targeting the symbols of a neighbouring country is far from being ethical, especially one that shares Algeria’s past, present and future”, Baraka stressed, adding that “His Majesty the King, may God preserve him, has always opened up to our brothers in Algeria given our shared cultural and religious background.

For his part, PPS Secretary General, Nabil Benabdallah, stated that resorting to such unethical and desperate methods to save face after losing several diplomatic battles, proves nothing but Algeria’s lack of righteousness and chivalry.
