On the margin of the 49th session of the UNHRC meeting in Geneva, Minister of Justice, Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi has held an important fruitful meeting with the UN Higher Commissioner for Human Rights Mrs. Michelle Bachelet.
Minister of Justice Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi has praised the takeaways of the important and fruitful dialogue he has had with the Higher Commissioner for Human Rights, due to the importance of this institution and its roles in the human rights field.
The Minister considers that the meeting was important to strengthen relationships between the Higher Commissioner’s office and the Moroccan Kingdom and look to the future for more cooperation action, through working and cooperating not only at the level of the Kingdom but at the level of the area, brotherly Arab countries and African countries as well on the ground of Morocco’s important political geographic and strategic position as the guarantor of stability.
The Minister has confirmed that democracy is the only means to achieve and protect human rights and that Morocco is looking forward to assuming its full legal responsibility in terms of human rights and playing its role vis-à-vis Arab and African brothers extending its hands to all for a close cooperation in this field.
In addition, the Minister has made before the UN Higher Commissioner for Human Rights a presentation about reforms undertaken by Morocco right now, by the government and the Justice Ministry in particular; pointing out that the Ministry of Justice is willingly determined to include a number of changes in both the penal and civil code procedures and in the penal law, integrating deep changes and amendments to reinforce women, child’s rights and human rights in general; and also to guarantee a fair trial and implement the principles and values of human rights.
From her side, the UN Higher Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs. Michelle Bachelet has praised the big role His Majesty King Mohammed VI is playing to strengthen human rights, expressing her gratitude, at the same time, to His Majesty for initiating a number of great progressive initiatives in the field of human rights and most particularly the file of women’s rights.
The UN Higher Commissioner for Human Rights has talked about the excellent and outstanding relationships linking the Moroccan Kingdom to the UN Higher Commissioner for Human Rights , seizing the opportunity to thank Morocco for its general support to the commissioner in African resolutions.
On the other hand, the UNHR Commissioner has asserted that the reform program for human rights in the Kingdom is an ambitious program since it pays an important interest to environment right as a basic right.
The UN official has expressed her thankfulness to Morocco for its sincere and permanent international commitments and for its presentation of international reports on human rights, expressing the importance of Morocco’s presenting its comprehensive periodic report this year.
The UN Commissioner has concluded by expressing the commissioner’s office readiness for more cooperation with the Moroccan Kingdom through establishing partnerships and precise programs to work on various topics and files to reinforce the culture and protection of human rights in Morocco.
