Morocco and Russia to strengthen their economic partnership

Morocco has ratified a new fishery agreement with Russia, in light of the kingdom’s recent cabinet meeting, headed by king Mohammed VI. This agreement covers all of Morocco’s shores, including southern coasts, for Russia’s naval fleet will drop by Agadir and Dakhla’s ports, south of Morocco.

This new agreement comes as a culmination of the unique diplomatic path linking both countries, given the importance of the visit to Moscow in October 2002, upon which, the king of Morocco held talks with the Russian head of state resulting in the signature of a joint statement regarding the strategic partnership between the two countries.

It is noteworthy that Morocco is on the edge of becoming Russia’s most prominent economic partner in Africa, for commercial activities between both countries have doubled a record 15 times in recent years, provided that in 2016 alone, commercial trade between Morocco and Russia reached a total value of $3 billion, at a time where Morocco’s exports to Moscow are still in the rise, mainly in terms of agricultural products.

Morocco’s exports to Russia included a total of 1.3 billion dirhams worth of citrus fruits and 900 million dirhams worth of tomatoes, while in 2018, the kingdom imported petroleum products worth 7.6 billion dirhams, and brought in 1.54 billion dirhams worth of wheat.
