Minister of Justice Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi has called on taking into consideration customs and traditions of Berbers during issuing judicial sentences

Minister of Justice Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi revealed on Tuesday, January 25, during a press conference held on the occasion of the signing of an agreement with the Royal Institute for Berber Culture (IRCAM) to integrate Berber language in the judiciary proceedings, that a training session will be organized in behalf of social assistants to be focused on a number of Berber customs and traditions.

The government official has made clear that a group of social assistants, either those who speak Berber or those who don’t speak it, to get to know about traditions in the Rif, the Atlas and Souss areas.

Mr. Ouahbi has confirmed that this will be important “when there is a conflict or a dispute where traditions impose themselves”, saying “this would help social assistants when offering his or her mediation of good offices and following files”; social assistants will therefore be able to explain to the judge the nature of traditions prevailing in the area, “to make easier for the judge to issue sentences according to traditions and customs and of course according to the law as well”.
