Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi calls for the embracing of a new vision for woman’s issue based on historical background of Moroccan women activists
PAM Secretary General Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi has called for the embracing of a new vision for Moroccan woman issue, to be based on a historical interpretation of Moroccan women activists and on an accurate diagnosis of the reality being reached by women movements, explaining that the PAM is fully aware that improving Moroccan women conditions, supporting and safeguarding their dignity is the only means to the state’s progress and prosperity of the society.
Mr. Ouahbi said, in a statement during the communication meeting of PAM women in Souss-Massa area held last Saturday, May 7, 2022 in Agadir, under the slogan “The Soussi woman pillar for women organization and essential mainstay or development”, that according to latest official statistics of the Higher Commissioner for Planning, the number of women outside job market has reached 10.5 million Moroccan women, representing 78.5% of the global women of 15 years old and above, so that 8 women out of each 10 are outside job market; and that more than 803 thousands women’s contribution to national economy are not counted in those figures.
Mr. Ouahbi has clarified that images of precariousness poverty and deprivation could be seen in more than 470 thousand widows of 15 years old and above, 56% out of them are housewives and about 200 thousand of widow women are handicapped.
Concerning the protection of Moroccan women dignity guaranteed by different monotheist religions and secular laws, Mr. Ouahbi has revealed that the report has talked about the continuation of ignorance, since illiteracy is widely spread among women and reaches 44%; while in the same context, we find that 13.4 million women whose ages vary between 15 and 74 and that more than 7.6 million women have been subject to violence during the last year; which represents 57% of women, 58% in urban areas (5.1 million women) and 55% in rural areas (2.5 million).
At the level political rights, Mr. Ouahbi has outlined that the report has disclosed the big paradox between efforts deployed by the state to increase political representativeness of women inside elected institutions and the living reality of Moroccan women in various economic, political, social and cultural sectors. So the progress seen in electoral gains and women presence in political parties, remains very low and does not exceed 6%.
The PAM SG said that our obligation today is to assume fully our responsibility regarding women issues and try to find solutions from different positions, from inside the government, Parliament and territorial communes, political parties and various organizations.
