Minister of Justice calls from Geneva to intensify cooperation among countries and governments about environment issues, sustainable development and allow individuals to enjoy human rights

Minister of Justice Mr. Abdellatif Ouahbi has qualified the endorsement by the UNGA last July of the resolution number 300/76 about human rights in clean sustainable and healthy environment”, supported by 161 states, with an initiative from the Moroccan Kingdom, Costa Rica, the Maldives, Slovakia and Switzerland as important, pointing out that the resolution has reconfirmed the close link between enjoying human rights and the importance of a clean, health and sustainable environment; stressing that his link has become today as basic condition in the context of climate and environment big challenges.

In a statement he made last Monday February 27n, 2023 at the UN Palace in Geneva, on the occasion of the 52nd session of human rights council, Minister Ouahbi said that this resolution has confirmed that reinforcing human rights in a clean, healthy and sustainable environment requires full implementation of the multilateral agreements on environment ,and needs intensification of efforts and on-going consultation between states and government about environment issues, sustainable development and allowing individuals to enjoy human rights, referring to the fat that UNSG Antonio Gutierrez has reaffirmed the importance of that resolution which he considered as “historical” which demonstrates the possibility of the union among countries members in the long struggle against “the Globe tripartite crisis” in its relation with climate change, loss of biology diversity and pollution.

In this context, Minister Ouahbi has made clear that climate change, misuse of natural resources, air, land and water pollution, unsafe management of chemical products and wastes and misuse of biological diversity, all this have impacts on individuals enjoyment of human rights. Minister Ouahbi has stressed the Moroccan Kingdom continuing determination and necessary interest to fight against climate changes and environment protection, making of the Kingdom a leading country in the protection of environment such as renewable energies and its commitments to reduce global warming gases within the context of a national strategy for sustainable development endorsed by the Moroccan Kingdom in execution to His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s instructions.

Minister Ouahbi has reminded that the Moroccan Kingdom has set up a national climate plan 2020-2030, which is aimed at reinforcing the capacity to accelerate the move to low-carbon economy, fight against climate change, resort to solutions that rely on nature and produce clean energies and develop green industry and provide industrial zones with renewable energies. In this context, the Moroccan Kingdom; as said Minister Oubai, has succeeded to update its contributions to limit greenhouse gas emissions by 45;5% in the horizons of 2030.

Out of consideration for the pivotal role of the right in water and its relation with other basic rights inn life, in health, Minister Ouahbi has highlighted that the Moroccan Kingdom is working on implementing His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s broad and strategic vision in water resources management through the establishment of a national program to provide drinkable water and irrigation extended over 2020-2027 period which is estimated at about $11 billion.
