In response to the major campaign recently launched to curb the “greed” of parking attendants, MP Fatima Al-Tousi, a member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, called on the Minister of the Interior to expedite the enactment of a law regulating the profession of parking attendants, in order to curb the chaos and disorder in the sector, which has led to a widespread sense of insecurity among citizens.
During her remarks at the oral question session held today (Monday) in the House of Representatives, Al-Tawsi said, “This sector is marred by a range of abuses and irregularities, including the frequent occupation of public and private property without legal justification, the exploitation of streets, alleys, and public squares, as well as forcing citizens to pay sums exceeding the standard rates—and even doubling them at night and during the summer—which has created a state of anxiety and discontent among citizens.”
The member of parliament added, “Mr. Minister, we must adopt a social approach to ensure that parking attendants work in a manner that preserves human dignity and provides decent living conditions, as well as health and social protections for this vulnerable group, and to reinforce the state’s role as protector and regulator.”
Al-Tawsi emphasized that, in order to protect citizens, it has become imperative to expedite the enactment of a law regulating this sector, to promote confidence in the rule of law and good governance, to require a license to practice this profession, and to standardize uniforms by requiring the display of a chest badge that must bear the license number.
